Demand that disabled homeless veterans in Los Angeles get the home and services they are entitled to
A few weeks ago, THOUSANDS of people took immediate action to demand that the West Los Angeles VA allowed a disabled veteran, Jessica Miles back into her home. Now we need to make sure that Jessica and the thousands of other disabled and homeless veterans living in Los Angeles get the homes and services they are entitled to.
For nearly 80 years, the West Los Angeles V.A. operated as a soldier's home until the 1970’s when the privatization began and the veterans were evicted from their home.
Now veterans like Jessica are sleeping in tiny boxes that don’t have a toilet, sink, or running water, and have to walk through dirt to use porta-potties and shared showers that don’t work properly. They also don’t have the keys which is how Jessica was locked out by staff with her possessions inside. When you add your name, the below demands will be sent to over 100 decision-makers who can make sure that veterans like Jessica get the resources they are entitled to:
- Give keys to the 100+ disabled veterans like Jessica who are living in "tiny homes" while waiting for permanent housing.
- Evict any entities at the National Soldiers Home violating the legal mandates requiring they only serve disabled and homeless Veterans.
- Stop charging rent to disabled veterans living in building 209 at the National Soldiers Home and reinstate the compensated work therapy program that for years helped veterans re-enter the workforce as part of their treatment.
- Stop using city-funded programs to house disabled Veterans miles away from the VA medical hospital and treatment resources where they get care and wait for vouchers that then require them to spend most of their disability income on market-rate rent in an apartment that is far away from their treatment.
- Use the hundreds of millions of dollars that Congress appropriated for the West Los Angeles VA to renovate the Soldiers' Home buildings that are abandoned or illegally occupied.
- Strike Section 705 from the PACT Act which allows the Secretary of the V.A. to continue leasing VA property to entities that do not benefit veterans directly.
