STOP HB 20!

HB 20 is a bad bail bill pending in the Criminal Jurisprudence Committee, in the Texas House of Representatives. It would eliminate personal bonds for several categories of alleged crimes. Being ineligible for a personal bond means that an individual will be required to pay a cash bond in order to be released from jail.

HB 20 inverts the presumption of innocence. Disqualifying someone from a loan based on a crime they're accused of, forces people to prove their innocence BEFORE a trial. They are presumed guilty.

62% of Texas’s jail population is presumed innocent, awaiting trial behind bars. This is because most can't afford bail. The result of HB 20 would be more poverty-driven incarceration, especially of Black and Brown Texans.

We're asking you to do two things to kill this bill:

First, add your name to this petition. Your opposition will be sent directly to the legislator's email addresses, to tell them to vote against HB 20.

Second, call 512-883-8959. You'll receive instructions and then be connected to members of the Texas Legislature. Tell them to oppose HB 20!
